WhatIfLab started from a simple frustration: most “what if” content online is either lazy speculation dressed up as science, or dense academic writing that never quite answers the question. We wanted something in between — hypothetical scenarios taken seriously, explained clearly, and honest about where established science ends and educated speculation begins.

How we work

Every article starts with a real scientific question: what does physics, biology, or earth science actually predict if a specific variable changed? We research the relevant field, pull in published findings and established physical constants, and run the numbers where numbers are the honest answer. When something is genuinely uncertain — and in questions this big, plenty is — we say so explicitly, rather than presenting a guess with the same confidence as a measured fact.

Each piece opens with a direct, no-scrolling-required answer, then walks through the reasoning step by step, separates established science from speculation in clearly marked call-outs, and closes with related scenarios worth exploring next. We organize everything into six fields — Space, Earth, Humans, Animals, Science, and Technology — so you can follow a thread of curiosity wherever it leads.

We're not a peer-reviewed journal, and we don't claim to be. We're a science publication in the tradition of well-researched explainer journalism: careful with sources, transparent about uncertainty, and written for readers who want to actually understand something, not just skim a headline.
